Fixtures

Below we have listed ideas for the main fixtures you could use in a SMILE room and why, all of these can be substituted depending on the projects size and your particular needs.

Rompa Bubble Tube

Rompa Bubble Tube

A bubble tube is an excellent way to help anyone relax, with the slow rising bubbles and steady sound of the pump.  When combined with a wireless or wired controller it can be used with pupils with SEN to help them open up and interact, Rompa's deluxe wireless controller also has additional interactive feature to help work with SEN children. All children love to use the controllers to control the colour of the bubble tube and can be used to set the colour to compliment the rest of the room for different projects.

Optic fibre Cloud

Optic fibre Cloud

We want an area of the SMILE room (design 1) that could be used for relaxation, a cosy area for story telling in small groups. We already had some optic fibres and wanted to reuse them (for design 1), so we designed a cloud, this will hang over the cosy areas and when you lie down and look up you will see this sparkling dark cloud above you.

On lower budgets you could make one using UV reactive paint or glow in the dark paint, then either use a UV lamp (LED ones are the safest) or a UV torch which can be great when working with SEN children.

Screen Goo - Projection Screen Paint

Screen Goo - Projection Screen Paint

Screen Goo is special paint that can be used to produce a projection surface of any size. Unlike traditional screens which are very costly, screen goo can be applied directly to walls and is used for everything from home theatre rooms to Universal Studios attractions. If using only a painted wall the refraction of light is poor and results in a washed out picture with poor contrast and definition.

Screen Goo comes in two versions, one white version for normal projectors including Active Shutter 3D projection and a special silver one for Passive 3D projection (please see the hardware page for more information on these types of projector).

Geo Seating

Geo Seating

We wanted seating that looked fun, yet was practical and easy to move out of the way. The Geo Seating range is perfect, designed for use in high traffic areas and has optional casters, the four arm version fits perfectly into design 1 and complements our four zones.

Entering Narnia

Entering Narnia

We want the SMILE room to be a magical place, a place where pupils feel they have been whisked away to another land or place. An idea to help with this was to have the door replaced with a wardrobe construct, to allow the pupis to feel as if they are stepping into a different place not just another room, as if they were entering Narnia. This also can help with access, in design 1 the room currently has glass windows next to the door and this will allow us to widen the entrance to help less mobile pupils.

Seasonal Wall Art

Seasonal Wall Art

For the cosy area we wanted to have it change every so often, we wanted something that might reflect the season or time of year. To keep the ideas open we intend to have different boards that are fixed to the wall with safe standoffs, this way they can be changed whenever we want and could even include artwork produced by the children themselves.

Glowtec's - StarGlow Cosmic Ceiling Paint

Glowtec's - StarGlow Cosmic Ceiling Paint

We didn’t want to have the ceiling a boring plain colour, that’s not very fun to look at is it. We wanted something that would fit in with different scenarios and yet still be relaxing, but also not too vivid or stimulating and ideally that we could turn on and off. Not the easiest task but we found UV StarGlow ceiling paint, with this we can turn any ceiling into a magical starry night sky with the use of a Ultraviolet light (black light) which we already had in both designs.

Tacktile Board

Tactile Board

Tactile boards are very useful to use with pupils with Special Needs and are loved by all others. Most tactile boards you buy are very boring so we are going to build one that more resembles a piece of modern art rather than a tactile board, but keeps all the functionality of one.
